Part 2: Losing Their Home
The little girl didn't go to her friends houses, because she didn't ask them to come to hers. So if they asked, she simply said, "Her mom said no." She was jealous of her friends. Her shoes were taped together and she had only two dresses.
Their home was that car until the day a few months later when the car was towed away.
Finally they got on welfare. And she got another brother. Eventually they stayed at a women's and children's shelter where they shared a three-room apartment with three other families. It had only two bedrooms filled with bunk beds.
Occasionally her mom would find a job. Sometimes they would live with relatives or stay at hotels. From a child's point of view it was difficult. She loved her mom but found herself wondering why her mom just didn't get a job.
Circumstances led her to become homeless again at age 17. They were on welfare and then the earthquake hit Northridge, California where they had been living. They lost what little they had. She didn't finish high school.
